‘It’s DISGUSTING’ EU hammered for ‘forcing bad deal’ on UK with Brexit punishment bill

THE Sweden Democrats have slammed the European Union (EU) for trying to stick the UK with a bad deal as they branded the bloc’s Brexit threats “disgusting”.

Mattias Karlsson, the group leader of the Sweden Democrats in the Swedish Parliament, reeled against Brussels’ decision to punish  with a £50bn divorce bill in the upcoming exit talks.Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Mr Karlsson said EU leaders should respect democracy and honour the will of the British people.He said: “It’s disgusting actually.“I think we need Britain – all the European countries need Britain.

“We are cousins in a cultural sense, we have a lot of common interests and the British people have democratically chosen this path to leave the .

“We should respect that and we should make the negotiations as smooth and friendly as possible. The signals that are now coming from the European Union, the leadership there, are just appalling.“Threatening Britain and making remarks that are not respectful to the British people, I think it’s just sad.”The right-wing politician, who’s party has surged in popularity in recent months, said the Sweden Democrats want to secure a good trade deal with Britain once it leaves the bloc.Mr Karlsson added it was difficult to lay out the specifics, but added cooperation across as many platforms as possible would be of great benefit to both nations.

He said: “I want us to cooperate in as many areas as possible.“It’s hard for me to sit here now and [outline] a deal but we want to have trade deals with Britain, we need the British people and the British people need us.“We have common interests and I think we could build on those common interests to have a respectful and prosperous relationship as neighbours.”Quizzed on whether he believed the EU was willing to sacrifice a potential trade deal with the UK to punish Britain for leaving the union, Mr Karlsson said he, unfortunately, believed it was a strong possibly.

Mr Karlsson said: “Yes, unfortunately, it looks like that. It just stresses the fact that we have to get rid of the current leadership of the European Union.

“They are unworthy, they are not acting in the interest of European citizens and the respective nations.“We should not have these kinds of negotiations, it would be much better if every country had negotiations with Britain rather than now being forced to obey the rules and the terms of the European Union.”Saying the situation could not be tolerated any longer, he added: “The overwhelming majority of the Swedish people would like to have a good relationship, a good trade deal with Britain but it looks like the EU leadership might force us to not have that.

“That’s just undemocratic and it’s a situation that cannot be tolerated anymore.”The support for  comes as the country could face a shock election next year, as the .A YouGov poll showed nearly a quarter of voters say they said they would vote for the Sweden Democrats if an election were held now, meaning its support is at nearly double the level during 2014 general election.The survey gave the Sweden Democrats 23.9 per cent of support, in the lead ahead of the governing Social Democrats on 22 per cent of support.
