And Mr Brok said: “I believe this is solely about her wanting to extend her own power position to gain leeway.
“Whether she will use this for hardness during negotiations or whether she will use it to strengthen herself within her party. I think the latter is more likely to be the goal.”
“But of course she might also become more intransigent. We do not know. I hope the former will be the case, otherwise it doesn’t make any sense.”
His fellow MEP Guy Verhofstadt, who will lead the parliament’s negotiating team, has also welcomed the election as a chance for the British people to have another say on Europe.
“As the EP Brexit negotiator, I will work with a new government for the best common future possible.”
