‘Stop this arrogance’ German MEP savages Juncker and Verhofstadt during epic Brexit tirade

A GERMAN MEP launched a furious tirade at Jean-Claude Juncker and Guy Verhofstadt in the European Parliament, blaming the pair’s “arrogance” for Brexit.

Hans-Olaf Henkel, a leading member of the Parliament’s third-biggest group, the European Conservative and Reformists, used a plenary session in Strasbourg to take aim at the two European federalists while Mr Verhofstadt tabled a resolution to delay Brexit trade talks.MEPs voted to support Mr Verhofstadt’s Brexit resolution, which deemed Britain has not made “sufficient progress” to proceed to trade talks with the bloc.

The European Parliament passed the motion warning that “sufficient progress has not yet been made” agreeing on the key areas – the so-called Brexit bill, the rights of EU citizens and the Irish border.

The resolution was backed by 557 MEPs in Strasbourg, with 92 voting against and 29 abstentions.

Brexit news: Hans-Olaf Henkel fumed at leading EU leaders for their role in Brexit

Mr Barnier, you should stop giving the impression you want to punish the British

Hans-Olaf Henkel

Speaking in the chamber, Mr Henkel blast: “Well, I would like to make it very clear from the beginning, I was against Brexit and Mr Gonzalez Pons made the point that after Brexit people like Nigel Farage are leaving this parliament.“Well, I would like to remind you not only him, but all British people are leaving this parliament and these are the last advocates in this parliament who are in favour of competitiveness, of decentralisation, and of safe responsibility of a country for its debts.”

Mr Henkel proceeds to point toward Messrs Juncker and Verhofstadt for their role in Britain’s European Union departure.

The German claimed the pair had provided easy ammunition to Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage during the Leave campaign with their anti-Brexit rhetoric.

Mr Henkel said: “But it was, and let’s not forget, it was the Junkers, it was the Broks, it was the Verhofstadts, in this parliament who carry a lot of responsibility for the Brexit in the first place.“It was their mantra for more Europe, more centralisation, more socialisation which led to the referendum in the first place.

“And, it was their inflexibility on the immigration issue which gave the arguments for the Johnsons and the Farages to swing the results towards Brexit.”

Mr Henkel also offered the European Parliament and Britain some advice to how they should proceed into future Brexit negotiations for the benefit of every European country.

“Secondly, Mr Barnier, you should stop giving the impression you want to punish the British for their decision.

“And, here’s a message to London, they should really get their act together and come up with a stable and unified government to face this Commission in this critical phase
