Theresa May ‘must keep Boris and SACK Philip Hammond to save Brexit’ Tory MPs demand

THERESA May must keep Boris Johnson in his post as Foreign Secretary and sack Chancellor Philip Hammond to save Brexit, voices within the Conservative party have claimed.

The party has been fraught with infighting following the disastrous snap election which saw the Conservatives lose their majority, Cabinet feuding on Brexit negotiations and a calamitous conference speech from the PM.Mrs May has come under increasing pressure to sack Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in recent weeks after he laid out his Brexit red-lines in a challenge to the Prime Minister.

But Tory sources have claimed it is Chancellor Philip Hammond who should face the chop and not the Brexit backing Foreign Secretary.

MP Nadine Dorries claimed Mr Hammond, who backs a business first approach to leaving the EU, was frustrating Brexit.

“I just don’t think he’s been 100 per cent on board.”Boris supporters echoed the claims, describing him as a “charismatic player” for the PM.

One ally said: “In a Cabinet full of such dullards, to send your star striker off the field seems a pretty odd thing to even contemplate.

“Boris is a really great charismatic player.

“The same can’t be said of Hammond.”Another added: “We would love to see her sack Hammond.

“The point is Boris is the one constantly being accused of being disloyal – but actually the one being disloyal is Philip Hammond.”

Boris has recently claimed it is time to focus on the real issues and get away from party squabbling amid claims he may be demoted from his senior Cabinet position.

The Foreign Secretary sent fellow MPs a call to arms on the messaging application WhatsApp after the Prime Minister’s gaffe-ridden speech, which featured Mrs May being handed a P45 by comedian Lee Nelson, erupting into a coughing fit and struggling on as the lettering from a sign fell behind her.

He wrote: “We have just had an election and people are fed up with all this malarkey.”Get behind the PM.

“Ordinary punters I have spoken to thought her speech was good and anyone can have a cold.

“Circle the wagons, turn the fire on Corbyn and talk about nothing except our great policies and what we can do for the country.”

Meanwhile, MP James Cleverly has also thrown his opinions into the Conservative group WhatsApp group, likening the party squabbles to acts of self-pleasure.

He said: “It might feel nice for the person doing it, it’s really distasteful for everyone who is forced to watch and it achieves nothing other than a bit of a mess.”
