Pay for FISH! EU to demand ‘fish for airlines’ trade deal in Brexit row

THE European Union appears to be gearing up to play hardball when trade talks kick off as officials look to get their hands on Britain’s fishing rights after Brexit.

The UK fishing industry has talked about regaining control of British territorial waters and its fishing rights – a view backed up by Environment Secretary Michael Gove who said because of Brexit the UK will be able to “dramatically increase the amount of fish we catch”.But some senior European Union officials appear to be ready to throw those plans into chaos as they look to get their hands on a slice of the lucrative fishing waters, with 716,000 tonnes of herring alone being caught in the North Sea by boats from EU countries in 2015.

EU officials appear to be targeting the UK’s fishing rights and want to use that as a bargaining chip in the talks in return for progress in other areas where Britain would require market access.

One unnamed EU diplomat told the Financial Times: “The UK government will ultimately need to decide how much it wants to pay to make the fish dream come true.”

The EU is looking to gain access to UK fishing waters

The bloc’s officials expect London to to be confronted with a “fish for airlines” dilemma, where fishing rights are traded for a deal on airline routes, according to the paper’s source.British fishing waters are highly sought after and are home to 88 per cent of the adult population of North Sea adult herring and UK fishermen see Brexit as the nation’s chance to take advantage of those stocks and free themselves from the shackles of the EU-wide quota system.

Scottish fishermen are looking to Brexit to fill their nets, given the large majority of North Sea herring are located in British waters off the Shetland Islands.

One survey just before last year’s referendum found that 92 per cent of fishermen backed leaving the EU.

“But we are being done over in the most absurdly distorted way. Brexit is an exciting opportunity.“We’re going to get one shot at this.”

It comes after a Fishing for Leave official said that the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy was crushing livelihoods and forcing fishermen to throw back dead fish.

Alan Hastings said: “Fishermen are being forced to catch more than necessary but to land less – crushing livelihoods and the marine environment. This mad, unsustainable quota system must end in mixed fisheries when Britain Leaves the EU“A quota system will always lead to discards in a mixed fishery where it is impossible to catch the right mixture of fish.
