The boat people, seeking better lives in Europe, departed from Cesme in Turkey’s province of Izmir off the Aegean, Xinhau reported.
Golias also said that state-of-the art surveillance planes, drones, night vision equipment and SUVs were bought in recent years to help patrol the borders.
The tiny, landlocked state has begun building a fence along its border with Greece, blocking a key transit route for migrants travelling from Turkey to northern and western Europe.
“We don’t have anything against the other people, but we have to cross too”, he told The Associated Press.
Work on the chain-link fence began Monday, with completion planned by Christmas.
The Interior Ministry says seemingly unwarranted asylum applications will be fast tracked and applicants returned quickly, including those arriving across the border from Russian Federation, which Finnish officials have declared a safe country.
The number of asylum seekers making their way to Germany this year approached one million as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government struggles to shelter and register the influx of migrants fleeing war and poverty.
De Maiziere’s remarks came after he announced that 965,000 individuals were registered in Germany as asylum-seekers from January to November.
Turkey has been stepping up efforts to stop migrants from leaving to Greece by sea after it reached a deal with the European Union to stem the flow of refugees into Europe.
“It is clear that the control of common external borders should be rapidly reinforced”, said interior ministers Bernard Cazeneuve and Thomas de Maiziere in the letter, dated December 3, calling for a “substantial reinforcement” of the EU’s Frontex border agency.
Mr De Maiziere said the actual number of new arrivals to the end of November is below 965,000 because of people who registered a few times or continued to other countries, but he can not say how much lower.
It said the number trumped previous estimates set for the whole year, with 484,000, over half, coming from Syria, according to the data.
