Douglas Carswell: Why I’m backing Vote Leave in the EU referendum

A year to the day since winning the Clacton by-election for Ukip, I’m joining the cross-party, business backed campaign to leave the EU

It’s here! After weeks of preparation, a cross-party, business-backed campaign group to the leave the EU has launched today – and I am delighted to be 100 percent behind it.

I have spent my entire adult life campaigning for Britain to break free from Brussels. I switched parties and was prepared to fight by election in order to try to get the government to give us an In / Out vote. I would cheerfully cross a six-lane motorway if I thought it would help ensure an Out vote. Being able to work alongside decent, patriotic MPs from all parties, such as Labour’s Kate Hoey, former colleagues Bernard Jenkin and Steve Baker, and John Mills, Labour’s largest single donor, is a pleasure.

Massive economic and technological forces are reshaping the world around us. We can see the consequences of this on our TV screens each day.

The European Union has lost control, and is unable to respond. Being part of the EU means we can be outvoted by the Euro block on economic matters. It means we are left with the consequences of Mrs Merkel’s clumsy response to the migration crisis.

The safest thing we can do is vote to take back control.

Vote Leave advocates a new relationship between Britain and the EU, based on free trade and friendly cooperation. By leaving the EU, we would end the supremacy of European law, and restore our sovereignty and democracy.

Instead of subcontracting British trade policy to Brussels bureaucrats, we would regain our seat on the World Trade Organisation, and be a greater influence for free trade and friendly cooperation around the globe.

Ukip’s National Executive Committee has made clear that the party’s position is to work with any group that has a good chance of winning the designation as the official Leave campaign. It is not up to me, Ukip or any political party to decide who gets the official designation. That decision will be made by the Electoral Commission.

Whoever they designate, we need to be in a position to play our part.

The outcome of the referendum hangs finely in the balance. It will be decided by those that have not yet made up their minds.

Having fought and won two parliamentary elections over the past year, I know the importance of appealing to undecided voters. Everything I have learnt from my experience of fighting and winning for Ukip in Clacton convinces me that the Vote Leave campaign has what it takes to win.

Let’s take back control. Please join me and sign up here.
