EU poll shows PM Theresa May must heed the people

IF TOMORROW’S BBC documentary on the battle for Brexit shows us anything it is the danger of treating the British people with complacency.

Theresa May has been encourage to implement Brexit sooner rather than later

It emerges that from start to finish the Remain camp believed wholeheartedly and blindly that they would win. They ignored the deep-seated and justified concerns that the public has about the European Union.

While they bickered about the best way to make their case, a quiet majority of leavers waited for good reasons to convince them they should stay – and waited in vain.

This paper believes that the right decision was reached by the country because the evidence showed leaving the EU was in all of our best interests.

That said, it is shocking to hear that David Cameron apparently felt unwilling to argue his case properly for fear of splitting his party. No matter which side of the divide you were on the public had the right to a full and proper discussion.

It comes as less of a surprise to hear of Jeremy Corbyn’s apparent lack of interest in the campaign. His motives are his own but if he did actually believe the UK would be better off outside the EU then the debate might have been better served by his staying true to the principles he claims to be so proud of.

Early signs suggest that Theresa May is more likely to listen to the voice of the people than her predecessor or the Opposition leader. Time will tell but one thing is certainly clear. The Prime Minister has begun her premiership with this message fresh in her mind: do not take the British people for granted.
