How Switzerland is being held to RANSOM by EU on free movement to teach UK a Brexit lesson

BRUSSELS will get tough on Switzerland’s trade deals to set a precedent for the UK’s own relationship with the EU following the Brexit vote.

Brussels chiefs want to make an example of Switzerland ahead of tough Brexit negotiations, an EU source said.

After Britain’s decision to leave the EU, Switzerland’s relationship with the bloc has become more strained.

Currently, Switzerland’s bilateral deals give the country access to EU markets including air and road traffic and agriculture.

If Switzerland did not allow any freedom of movement, it could cut itself off from the EU with particularly brutal consequences on its financial services sector.

Referring to David Cameron’s pitiful EU negotiations which sparked Brexit, the source told Politico: “Basically, Switzerland will get a ‘Cameron minus minus’ deal.

“No quantitive cap on the number of EU workers in Switzerland is possible, the EU side is making that very clear.”

The Swiss referendum in February 2014 saw just over half of voters electing a tougher stance on migrants.

Both Britain and Switzerland want control over the number of EU citizens in their countries, while maintaining access to the single market and other bilateral deals with the EU.

Instead of being part of the EU, Switzerland sells over 50% of its exports to the bloc and has agreed more than 120 bilateral agreements with Brussels so Switzerland still has access to Europe’s markets.

Swiss academics are concerned the Brexit vote will mean the EU will take a tougher stance with the Swiss.

A professor at the University of Geneva said: “I don’t see any possibility for the EU to give anything to Switzerland.”

The European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Swiss Confederation President Johann Schneider-Ammann are due to meet in Zurich in September to discuss a dispute resolution.

Following a meeting in July, the Swiss Government said: “The two sides acknowledged that the outcome of the UK referendum had complicated efforts to find a solution within the timeframe set out in the constitution.”
