Human Rights Act WILL be SCRAPPED for British Bill of Rights, Liz Truss insists

THE HUMAN rights act will be binned and a British Bill of Rights installed in its place, the Justice Secretary has promised.

Liz Truss has said the much-vaunted bill will be introduced, despite reports in recent weeks Theresa May’s government is planning to scrap the 2015 manifesto pledge.A government source was recently quoted in The Times as saying they believed Mrs May could “junk” the bill.

The Tories ran at the last election on a pledge to “restore common sense in the application of human rights in the UK”.

Speaking to BBC’s Radio 4’s Today programme Ms Truss said: “We are committed to that.

For years Britain has been engaged in bitter disputes with the European Court of Human Rights, based in Strasbourg.

While serving as Home Secretary Mrs May fought to have Abu Qatada deported from Britain, but was consistently blocked in doing so.

Writing in 2015, Nick Timothy, currently the Prime Minister’s joint chief of staff, called for the withdrawal from the European Convention to escape the jurisdiction of Strasbourg.

“It would allow British courts and British judges to decide where the balance lies between those rights in individual cases,” he wrote in The Telegraph.

“It would mean the UK can protect the public and national security while still defending human rights.“And it would mean we can escape what has become a de facto European constitutional court: the UK should withdraw from the European Convention and the jurisdiction of the Court in Strasbourg.”

On Monday, Ms Truss announced that after an inquiry warned “self-styled emirs” were radicalising others behind bars.

She said: “Islamist extremism is a danger to society and a threat to public safety – it must be defeated wherever it is found.

“There are a small number of individuals, very subversive individuals, who do need to be held in separate units.”
