Bad news for Remainers! Parliament will NOT hold a vote before formally triggering Britain’s withdrawal from the EU

  • Government lawyers say EU can invoke Article 50 without Parliament vote
  • Some Labour MPs hoped to use a vote as an opportunity to stop Brexit

Parliament will not hold a vote before formally triggering Britain’s withdrawal from the EU, it was confirmed last night.

Remain campaigners had hoped ministers would have to come to Parliament before triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which begins the two-year process.

Some Labour figures hoped to use a vote as an opportunity to stop Brexit.

A Remain supporter, Alice Cooper, demonstrates outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh back in June. Most Scots voted to stay in the EU, but were outnumbered by English voters

But government lawyers have confirmed what was widely believed to be the case – the Prime Minister has the executive power to invoke Article 50 and begin the formal process of exiting the European Union without a vote.

A Downing Street source told The Telegraph: ‘The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that the British public have voted and now she will get on with delivering Brexit.’

It came as the former head of the civil service, Gus O’Donnell told The Times Brexit was not inevitable and he hoped the country would remain in a reformed EU.

Lord O’Donnell said he thought their would be a second referendum, and it would take parliament ‘years and years and years’ to separate fully from the bloc.

He told the Times: ‘Lots of people will say, ‘We’ve had the referendum, we’ve decided to go out, so that’s it, it’s all over.’

‘But it very much depends what happens to public opinion and whether the EU changes before then. It might be that the broader, more loosely aligned group is something that the UK is happy being a member of.’

One of the key forces in the Brexit campaign, Nigel Farage, pictured, has since quit as UKIP's leader and will play no part in the exit negotiations
