REVEALED: Support for Brexit vote was higher among voters ‘abandoned by the establishment’

NEW research has shown that the people abandoned by the establishment and elites rose up in large numbers to free Britain from Brussels rule.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has claimed that support for Brexit was significantly higher among voters who had been “pushed to the margins of society”.It said there was a “double whammy” effect in areas of the country “left behind” by the modern globalised economy, with marginalised voters more likely to back withdrawal if they also lived in areas characterised by low skills and absence of opportunity.

The report found that lack of skills and educational qualifications was the “standout” factor behind support for Brexit.

Educational inequality was “far more striking” than low incomes as a driver of the Leave vote, it said.

The report tallies with admissions made by former Remain campaign chief Lord Rose, the ex-chief executive of M&S, that uncontrolled immigration caused by the EU was driving down low wages. The report also showed that people who are losing out on jobs because of historically high levels of net migration also backed Leave with 59 per cent of unemployed people wanting the UK to quit Brussels.

It also noted that those with all levels of qualifications were more likely to vote Leave in low-skill areas of the country, the report found.

While more than 70 per cent of people in low-skilled communities such as Tendring, Essex, voted for Brexit, more than 70 per cent in very highly skilled communities such as Cambridge voted to remain.

JRF chief executive Julia Unwin said the Brexit vote should be a “wake-up call” for the need to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to build a better life.Ms Urwin said: “The rapid pace of change in the economy has left too many people without the skills and opportunity to get on in life.

“We must act to ensure prosperity reaches all corners of the country and provide everyone the chance to earn a good wage in a secure job.

“Theresa May has made the right noises to overcome this and heal the divisions with a promise to make Britain work for all.

The elite despise the ordinary people of the UK

Ukip Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall

Ukip Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall said that the report backed the Ukip campaign that the establishment had abandoned many communities across the UK.But he hit out at the way the report appeared to try to dismiss Brexit voters as poorly educated.

He said: “It is easy for the elite to dismiss the concerns of those left disadvantaged by the historic error of our membership of the European Union as essentially poor and stupid.

“Of course they the elite feel themselves superior in every way.

“They despise the ordinary people of the UK, their taste, their fashions, what they eat, how they talk, how they think, who they support and what they believe.

“They only forget one simple thing, their comfortable, often tax-payer funded lifestyles are funded on the back of the low skilled, the low waged and their taxes.

“And in a democracy, a dustman has the same vote as a University professor – no matter how much this repels the professor’s oh so superior sensibilities”.

The fact is than when they push our backs against the wall and back their actions up with their arrogant superiority we fight back and will continue to do so. My own opinion is that very few of those who voted to remain have any idea of how the Eu operates. The read europhile papers talk in europhile circles and their kids are educated and associate with other europhile kids. They are totally unable to reject anything that does not fulfil their love of the EU. Since Brexit I have endeavoured to make them open their eyes and just try… Read more »
