Finance minister Pawel Szalamacha suggested the UK’s vote to leave the union could prompt others to quit the 28-nation bloc.

In an interview, he claimed the bloc was “not the only choice” and had been “demystified” following the vote on June 23 this year.

Mr Szalamacha says he believes Nordic countries in particular could be first to go, as they have a “strong sense of identity.”

The minister also said states may opt out of the union, as many feel “their destiny is no longer within their hands”.

He said: “I don’t think it’s a sensible policy just to rely on the decisions of the major international players.”

He added “the country needs to formulate on its own” and “put more stress on its domestic resources”.

His comments come a day after Poland’s deputy minister claimed 200,000 Poles will return home over the next few years because of Brexit.

Mateusz Morawiecki said Poland’s growing economy and low levels of unemployment will also tempt his countrymen in Britain to return.

Mr Morawiecki also expressed his sadness over the tragic death of Arkadiusz Jozwik, a 40-year-old Polish man who was killed in a suspected hate crime in Essex.
