First Brexit, now Frexit! Le Pen promises EU Referendum if she wins French elections

The Front National leader vowed to give the French people a ‘Frexit’ vote on whether they would like to stay in the European Union.Ms Le Pen is gearing up for next year’s presidential elections, and is the only party to come out and promise the groundbreaking vote.

Addressing a crowd in northeastern France, she said: “This referendum on France belonging to the European Union, I will do it.

“Yes it is possible to change things. Look at the Brits, they chose their destiny, they chose independence.

“We can again be a free, proud and independent people.”Ms Le Pen has previously said she would give the nation the power to decide on whether to stay or leave the superstate.

And when Brexit was officially announced, the 48-year-old tweeted her congratulations.

She posted: “Victory to liberty! As I have been demanding for many years, we now need the same referendum in France and EU countries.”Some 700 people gathered in the small village of Brachay to hear her speak on Saturday, waving French flags and chanting “Marine, President”.

She portrayed herself as the only credible means of restoring national unity and law and order.

And the National Assembly voted to extend the situation for a further six months in July, after 84 people were mown down in Nice by Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian national who died in the aftermath.Social tensions have been steadily rising in the country as a result of the attacks in France and across the continent, with several French cities recently voting to ban burkinis from beaches, with women who break the rules facing fines.

 

Early indications suggest she will make it to an early May run-off in France’s presidential elections, but will lose in the second round to a more mainstream candidate.

Regional elections in December saw the Front National leading in the first round of voting, but ending with no constituencies.She has previously slated her political peers on the left and right of the spectrum, branding them responsible for what she described as France’s “decline”.
