Bratislava 2016: ‘Show some respect’ Hungary blasts EU for deceiving nations with ‘tricks’

FACELESS Brussels bureaucrats have been blasted for attempting to subvert the wishes of elected European leaders with underhand “law-making tricks”.

Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orban ordered eurocrats to “show some respect” for democracy in a blistering attack at a meeting of EU leaders today. The firebrand leader, who has repeatedly clashed with Brussels over his tough stance on immigration, accused bureaucrats of “deceiving the will of sovereign nations” with reams of barely intelligible laws and directives.

His scathing remarks came at the opening of a summit of all 27 member states, minus Britain, in Bratislava which has been called to shape the future direction of the ailing European project.

EU leaders are meeting in Bratislava to thrash out the future direction of the bloc

Mr Orban has been particularly incensed by orders from Jean-Claude Juncker’s EU Commission that all countries will have to share the burden of the migrant crisis through refugee quotas. And today the Hungarian leader raged: “During my conversation with Martin Schultz, the President of the European Parliament I asked him to show respect for the Hungarian people.”I asked him stop using their law-creating tricks, deceiving the sovereign decisions and the will of the national states.

“He and the Commission have done that with the migrant quotas. The prime ministers voted for voluntary migrant quotas and they have changed that to mandatory quotas. The national states cannot accept this.”

Mr Orban has previously positioned himself as a defender of Christian Europe and has warned that a huge influx of predominantly Muslim migrants from the Middle East will change the continent’s character forever.More than a million migrants and refugees arrived in Europe last year, with many heading through Hungary on their journey towards the “promised lands” of Germany and Sweden. His comments came as EU Council President Donald Tusk who called for EU bosses to take a “sober and brutally honest” look at the bloc’s problems in a statment ahead of the meeting in the Slovakian capital.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras warned this morning that the EU is “sleepwalking in the wrong direction” over the migrant crisis and economic reforms as divided leaders continue to bicker over the future direction of the bloc.
