So WHY do you want independence? Scotland’s sales to UK FOUR TIMES that of EU, worth £50BN

THE SNP’s bid for a second independence referendum has suffered a massive blow after new figures revealed that Scottish exports to the rest of the UK have soared to £50billion – four times more than sales to the European Union

Scotland’s sales to other parts of the UK increased by £2.1bn, or 4.4 per cent, in 2015, according to the Scottish Government’s own figures. With the value of domestic exports far eclipsing the £12.3bn generated through EU sales, opposition politicians last night warned Nicola Sturgeon that she would be taking a “reckless gamble” by attempting to remove Scotland from the UK single market.

SNP plans for independence suffer massive blow as figures reveal soaring UK exports

The First Minister has repeatedly threatened a second vote on independence if Scotland is unable to retain access to the European single market after Brexit. The latest figures, published by the Scottish Government yesterday [WED], show that exports, excluding oil and gas, totalled £78.6bn in 2015.

Sixty-three per cent was made up of sales to the rest of the UK (49.8bn), 21 per cent in sales to the rest of the world (16.4bn) and 16 per cent to the EU (£12.3bn).

Scottish Secretary David Mundell insisted the figures proved that “the UK union is the vital union for Scotland” and highlighted that businesses north of the Border sold £37.5bn more in goods and services to the UK than they did to “all 27 EU countries put together”.He added: “Today’s figures show the UK is the vital Union for Scotland and highlight the importance of maintaining the UK market and preventing any new barriers to doing business across the UK as we leave the EU.

“We know the Scottish Government’s constant talk of a second independence referendum is creating damaging uncertainty for the Scottish economy.

“I again call on the first minister to end that uncertainty by taking her threat of another referendum off the table and working with us to get the best deal for Scotland and the whole of the UK.”Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said the “SNP government’s own figures show that independence would be considerably worse” that a hard-Brexit.

She added: “These figures confirm that the UK single market is four times more important to Scottish jobs and the economy than the EU single market.

“It is simply a reckless nationalist gamble to put access to the UK single market, and all the jobs that depend on it, at risk. That’s why the SNP must drop plans for a second independence referendum.”Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said thousands of jobs would be put at risk by independence and added: “These are the Scottish Government’s own figures – which makes it all the more astonishing that the SNP is determined to ignore them by continuing its ideological pursuit of separation.”

“The Nationalists would put jobs and trade at risk simply because they don’t like the United Kingdom.”

Scotland’s exports to the rest of the UK have soared to £50billion

Worth £4.8bn, the food and drink sector was the largest industry for exports with whisky sales responsible for the majority of sales (£3.8bn).The increase in UK exports was driven by a rise in the export of electricity, gas and water, the report said.

In total, Scottish international exports increased by £1bn to £28.7bn in 2015 with sales to the EU growing by 4.4 per cent, up £520million on the previous year.

Within the EU, the Netherlands (£2.3 bn) was the largest market, followed by France (£1.8bn) and Germany (£1.8bn).The Scottish Government’s Economy Secretary Keith Brown hailed the rise as hugely encouraging” but he added: “It is clear that since the vote to leave the European Union, we must continue to be seen to be a country that is outward facing and open for business.

“The EU market is eight times the size of UK market, which highlights the importance of remaining in the single market.”

He added: “I want to be clear that Scotland should not face a choice between exporting to the EU or UK. We can do both.”
