BRITAN does not want to be part of “Europe the country”, a hedge fund managing Leave campaigner has declared.

Sir Paul Marshall said Britain did not want ‘Europe the country’

Sir Paul Marshall said it was time for the UK’s politicians to stop going through “their different stages of grief” and to instead get on with making Brexit a success.

Sir Paul told the Financial Times he supported Theresa May’s decision to call a snap election as it will give her a stronger mandate to negotiate with the European Union.

He said: “The alternative is she risks being increasingly hamstrung by a parliament bogged down in denial.

“A victory will give her the mandate she needs to negotiate strongly.”

He said it was the business, rather than political, world which was working towards making the best of Brexit.

Sir Paul, who donated £100,000 to the Leave campaign before last June’s in-out referendum, said: “In Westminster you have politicians in bathhouses basically going through their different stages of grief.

“Some of them are in denial, some of them were angry [and] some of them are grudgingly getting to grips with it.”

Business people, however, are “just getting on with it”.

He said: “Those voices need to be centre stage and the politicians need to hear them.”

Sir Paul is a Brexiteer despite his long-term support of the Lib Dems.

He helped edit ‘The Orange Book – Reclaiming Liberalism’ and has donated a total of £200,000 to the party.

However his support has now wavered due to the party’s refusal to accept Britain is leaving the EU – something he said showed the Lib Dems “actually have a complete failure of analysis of what is going on”.

He explained: “I think the referendum would only ever have gone one way.

“Most people in Britain do not want to become part of a very large country called Europe.

“They want to be part of a country called Britain.”
