Donald Tusk’s Brexit ULTIMATUM: No negotiations until UK ‘sorts out Ireland’

DONALD TUSK has warned the European Union (EU) will refuse to begin Brexit negotiations with the United Kingdom until the issue of Ireland is resolved.

The border between the Republic of Ireland and the north of Ireland, which will become the only land border between the EU and the UK, was ignored by many during the referendum campaign.Since last June’s Leave victory, however, it has become cause for concern on the island, which has enjoyed a fragile peace since the end of the Troubles. The introduction of a hard border, or even customs checks, could lead to a rise in tension in a country still scarred by conflict.

All this is accompanied by the threat of a border poll in Ireland, with fears Brexit could lead to calls for a referendum on unification – a vote the island is entitled to under the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Tusk said these issues must be cleared up before the start of Brexit negotiations – along with other financial and social conditions.

Progress on people, money and Ireland must come first

He announced today, on the eve of a crunch Brexit meeting between the remaining 27 EU state leaders, more needed to be done by Mrs May and her Brexit ministers. The President of the European Council said: “I would like us to unite around this key principle during the upcoming summit, so that it is clear that progress on people, money and Ireland must come first.

“And we have to be ready to defend this logic during the upcoming negotiations.“Before discussing our future, we must first sort out our past.”His reference to money was another clear indication the bloc will not row back on their demand Britain must pay an exit bill of up to £50 billion.

‘People’ referred to the ongoing confusion surrounding the future status of EU nationals in the UK.He said this demand was “not only a matter of tactics, but – given the limited time-frame we have to conclude the talks – it is the only possible approach”.
