EU warns of CRISIS after Brexit as Brussels admits UK could be out of bloc by summer

BRITAIN could unshackle itself from the embattled European Union (EU) by as early as this summer as Brussels bosses desperately attempt to avoid a Brexit “crisis”, sources have claimed.

EU negotiators are said to be steeled for chaos following the lead up to the General Election 2017, which has stoked tensions across the continent.Theresa May’s refusal to reveal her hand over leave negotiations has riled up EU chiefs, including Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who is keen to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in Britain.

Left reeling by the Prime Minister’s claims “every vote for the Conservatives will make me stronger when I negotiate for Britain”, one European Union source said: “Frankly the size of the majority does not matter to us.”

As recent polls reveal Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Tory leader Mrs May are neck and neck, uncertainty over who is going to be the next leader clouds over the Brussels club who are reportedly worried the Prime Minister will refuse to stump up a Brexit bill. One EU ambassador told the Financial Times: “All the talks is over the big crisis, the walkout, and if it will be in the summer or October.

“We know it is coming.”

The EU has repeatedly warned Britain they must pay up €100billion to leave the bloc before trade talks begin, which has been branded “aggressive” by Mrs May.

Brexit Secretary David Davis has also insisted Britain will make its own rules over the eye-watering Brexit bill.

While the 27 members of the bloc have agreed a negotiation plan for Brexit with Mr Barnier, Britain is refusing to talk or assign any roles for a Leave team before Thursday’s election. This has prompted Brussels to worry Mrs May will turn next month’s EU summit into negotiations over citizen rights.

A EU insider warned “if she tries that she will be given the cold shoulder”.

Another EU diplomat added: “We ate not hung up about how senior they are. What we need is somebody empowered to actually take commitments, who is available and accountable.“You cannot make progress if you have somebody there who cannot commit and who cannot sell it to the public. That is a real risk.”
