FRONT OF THE QUEUE: Britain WILL get trade deal with US first says influential Congressman

BRITAIN will be at the front of the queue for a trade deal with the US after it leaves the European Union because of the two countries’ close historical ties, a leading Congressman has said.

George Holding, who sits on the US subcommittee on trade, confirmed that the UK will leap ahead of the rest of the EU for a trade pact once the negotiations are finished in 2019.In a major intervention made on the Independence Day anniversary of the June 23 vote the Republican grandee reiterated Donald Truro’s commitment to sealing an early agreement.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Ukip MEP Bill Etheridge, a former party leadership candidate, who travelled to the States last week to explore the economic opportunities of Brexit.During the discussion Congressman Holding asserted his belief that Britain will be “better off outside the EU” and sought to reassure UK politicians that any trade offer from America will be fair.

The remarks will provide a major boost to hard Brexit backers whose camp has been under siege following the shock UK General Election result earlier this month in which Theresa May lost her majority. And they reinforce the importance of Britain leaving the Customs Union and regaining control of its trade policy as the most important part of the ongoing divorce talks with Brussels. After the meeting Mr Etheridge, an MEP for the West Midlands, drew attention to the optimism many US politicians are displaying about the opportunities of Brexit which is in stark contrast to the pessimism of Remain backers at home.

We should be looking to the great opportunities we have as a nation

He said: “George Holding is one of the most important men on Capitol Hill when it comes to trade deals, and he made it crystal clear that the historic relationship the UK has with America will mean once we are free from Brussels we can establish a new deal which will benefit people both sides of the Atlantic.”It was great news to be told on what I hope will become the UK’s Independence Day, June 23, should Brexit negotiations actually go the way the people voted, that we have these opportunities which will benefit our economy.”Instead of listening to the scaremongering of the architects of Project Fear, whose tales of woe were disproved following the vote, we should be looking to the great opportunities we have as a nation.

“We will be free from the restraints of Brussels and able to embrace global free trade which will not only benefit people in the UK through things like lower food prices and a larger market for our goods but will also genuinely help people in the developing world.”

He added: “Just think of the huge markets we can have direct access to instead of cowering in fear at the thought that leaving the single market when statistics clearly show that the EU has shrunk as a percentage of the world economy.

“Philip Hammond and the other Remainers might be stirring the pot as we go into these negotiations but they are belittling our country with their weasel words.“They should be consigned to the tea room of inconsequence with the other people who got it wrong whilst those of us who see the potential of laissez faire economics get on with the business of getting the best deal globally.”Mr Trump himself has been inconsistent in terms of his approach to trade, especially with the EU, both castigating the bloc for being undemocratic and hailing it as a key ally.

But a potential trade war is brewing between the pair over possible US tariffs on imported steel – something Britain will be clear of if it takes back control of its trade policy after Brexit.
