Not a done deal! Japan dismisses EU trade deal and says UK could OVERTAKE Brussels

JAPAN’S ambassador to the UK has played down news of a trade deal with the EU, claiming that the agreement could take years to finalise.

Koji Tsuruoka, Japan’s ambassador to the UK, has hit out at the triumphant mood in Brussels, after EU elites boasted of agreeing a free trade deal with the Asian economic powerhouse.Earlier this week, Donald Tusk appeared to mock Britain by describing the European Union agreement as a sign of “Global Europe”.

This appeared to be a slight against Theresa May who has made “Global Britain” a slogan of her Brexit approach.

Speaking to BBC’s Radio 4, Mr Tsuruoka opened up the possibility that Britain could even beat the EU to a free trade agreement after leaving the bloc.

Mr Tsuruoka said a trade agreement with the UK would be easy, since Britain had already played a massive role in negotiating with Japan for the EU deal.

He told BBC’s Nick Robinson: “The EU deal has not been concluded yet, we have details to work out.”The agreement is a result of UK participation in the negotiation, so it will hopefully be suitable to the UK after Brexit as well.

“Once UK is out, we will welcome bilateral deals with them.”

When Robinson pointed out that the EU’s deal with Canada to a mammoth seven years to complete, Mr Tsuruoka agreed that wrapping up a deal with Brussels was a long way off.

He said: “It took four years and three months to lay down the structure of the deal, and you can guess how many more years we may need to finalise this.”

Mr Tsuruoka revealed that Japan and the EU are still struggling to negotiate tariffs on food, drink and cars after nearly 18 rounds of talks, over four years.

After the interview, Conservative MEP David Bannerman tweeted: “Japanese Ambassador plays down EU-Japan FTA: saying detail could take 4 years – UK FTA could well overtake it!”Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage also played down the significance of the deal announcement, tweeting: “Slow clap. Non-EU Switzerland did this years ago.”

At the end of last month, Shinzo Abe’s government laid out plans to open talks with the UK while it remains in the EU, even though formal negotiations cannot begin until after Brexit.

Japan is the world’s third-largest economy, and the country’s investment in the UK currently amounts to £71bn.
