Detailed plans of Britain’s post-Brexit relationship with the EU are to be published

David Davis’ department said it would be clarifying the UK’s position on a range of issues with the publication of formal strategy papers.Among the first to be published will be documents laying out the position ahead of the next round of negotiations including one detailing plans for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Two other papers will look at the availability of goods for the EU and the UK and access to official documents after Brexit.

Mr Davis said: “I’ve launched this process because with time of the essence, we need to get on with negotiating the bigger issues around our future partnership to ensure we get a deal that delivers a strong UK and a strong EU.“It’s what businesses across Europe have called on both sides to do and will demonstrate that the UK is ready for the job.”

The Brexit Secretary said publishing the documents was an important next step in “getting on with the task set to us by the British public”.

He said the first of the future relationship papers will set out proposals for a new customs arrangement with the EU and form the basis of a new push to inform businesses and other stakeholders, including officials in EU member country capitals, about the UK’s plans.The new push to set out the UK’s position and lobby interest groups comes ahead of the October European Council summit, where EU leaders will judge whether Brexit talks have made sufficient progress to proceed to the next phase — talks on the future relationship.

This phase will include discussion of options for a transition deal and groundwork for a future trade agreement between the UK and the EU.


Britain is scheduled to leave the EU in March 2019

It comes as ministers on opposite sides of the Brexit debate sought to shut down talk of Government splits on quitting the EU by launching a public show of unity.Philip Hammond and Liam Fox used a joint statement to vow a transition period to smooth the way after Britain formally leaves the European Union will be time-limited and not a “back door” to staying in the bloc.

They also insisted that Britain will leave the single market and customs union in 2019 when it formally leaves the EU.
