May’s Brexit SNUB to EU: Prime Minister REFUSES to address Brussels parliament in public

THERESA May has delivered a major snub to European Union (EU) chiefs by refusing an invitation to address the Parliament on Brexit.

The Prime Minister had been invited to speak in Brussels regarding the remaining red-line issues during Brexit negotiations, which have juddered to a halt in recent weeks. However rather than directly address European leaders Mrs May has decided to keep schtum, letting her Brexit team led by David Davis get on with things instead.

The move is being seen as a clever mind game by those on the UK’s side of the negotiating table.

However EU officials have reacted with fury, attempting her of committing “another own goal”.

Theresa May has refused to address the European Parliament on Brexit

The Guardian quotes him as blasting: “The European parliament remains ready to offer flexible solutions. Why make enemies? It’s ridiculous.”Downing Street said the PM is happy to discuss Brexit matters with various European presidents but did not deny she had already turned down the offer of a formal address.

A spokesman said: “The prime minister has confirmed to President Tajani that she would be happy to address the conference of presidents. A date will now be arranged with his team.”

Nigel Farage also hit out at the decision, telling Mrs May: “I think that will be a mistake, I think if she’s going to come, she ought to address the full plenary.”I will look forward, as the leader of the Ukip delegation and the EFDD group, to welcoming the British Prime Minister to the European Parliament, as I did Gordon Brown and Tony Blair before her.

“I expect to find out just how determined are we to stand up to the thugs and bullies in Brussels.

“I’ll just be encouraging her in a very supportive, constructive mode.”

It comes after the EU’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier accused Mr Davis of not making negotiations his priority.Minutes from a meeting on July 12 reveal: “Mr Barnier … observed that the United Kingdom had not yet really engaged in the negotiations or spelled out its positions. He noted in this regard that David Davis … did not regard his direct involvement in these negotiations as his priority and there was also a possibility that he might not be present at the full opening session of the July cycle of talks.”
