Theresa May comes out fighting with hard Brexit plan after Lord Harris brands her HOPELESS

THERESA May will come out fighting with a tough Brexit plan after being branded “hopeless” by a major Tory donor.

The Prime Minister was slammed by Lord Harris of Peckham today for leading a “weak” Government that was split on the practicalities of leaving the European Union. He also criticised the “shell-shocked” leader for her performance at the general election and “stupid” attacks on business.

But Mrs May is expected to answer her critics with a hard-hitting speech promising a “clean Brexit” at the next Conservative Party conference.

Even Tony Blair would be a better leader

Lord Harris

Her address to the Tory faithful in Manchester on October 4 is expected to contain “plenty of red meat” on how to make a clean break fro the EU without a prolonged transition period, a Tory insider told the Financial Times. It is expected to include echo robust statements she made before her disastrous election campaign, pledging to take back control of the country’s laws and borders.

Mrs May is tipped to refer back to her hard-hitting speech at Lancaster House where she defiantly said Britain should leave the single market.

She is expected to use it to push to retain single market and customs union arrangements during a transitional period once Britain leaves.

It comes after around 35 Eurosceptic Conservatives signed a letter warning that lengthy transitional period where Britain stayed in the single market could lead to remaining in the EU by “stealth”.

And Lord Harris weighed in with scathing criticism of Mrs May for her performance as Prime Minister, claiming even Tony Blair would be a better leader.

The ex-deputy treasurer of the Conservatives, told the Times: “I thought for the first three or four weeks she did well.”Then she did the election and she was hopeless.

“She’s changed her mind too many times.

“I think she was shell-shocked but she’s got to start making decisions, or someone has… Theresa May has got a great opportunity if she lets (her ministers) work and leads them.

“I don’t know if she can lead them or not.”

Theresa May has been criticised

On the subject of Brexit, he said: ”Both sides don’t know what they want at the moment or where they want to go.”I’d much rather have a strong Labour government than a weak Conservative one and I’m a Conservative through and through.

“I wouldn’t want Jeremy Corbyn but if you had Tony Blair when he first got in now he would be very good for this country.”

The Prime Minister also last week insisted she is “not a quitter” and vowed to lead the Conservatives into the next general election.

But the decision sparked warnings that she would fuel moves to oust her before 2022.

Lord Harris would serve us all better if he were more supportive. How he can say he is a Conservative through and through, yet would prefer a strong Labour government to a weak Conservative one is beyond the pale.
