Brexit must happen faster! Delay sparks fears of NO TRADE with new partners, expert warns

DELAYS to Brexit trade talks with the European Union could put other trade deals with international partners at risk, the Legatum Institute’s Shanker Singham warned.

Mr Singham said the United Kingdom is at risk of losing out on trade deals with international partners due to the delay in Brexit trade talks with the European Union. The Legatum Special Trade Commission chairman told BBC Radio 4 Today: “The challenge for the Government is that, if we’re too locked into the European regulatory system for a long period of time, then we won’t be an attractive trading partner for those other countries.

“They will say ‘well, we have to wait five years before we’re really in the negotiations and you’re going to rules that are very very close to the EU rules.’ So that’s actually gonna make it very difficult for us to negotiate.”

Mr Singham said Brexit Britain might suffer from delayed trade talks with the EU

Mr Singham said the Government should use the interim period it wants to negotiate with Brussels to “minimise disruption” to UK businesses and establish the goals it wants Brexit Britain to achieve. He continued: “I think what you have to look at is how to minimise disruptions and maximise opportunities.

“Everything we do should be guided by that. What we do in the interim will determine end-state opportunities. Other trading partners are looking at this process.”

Conservative MEP Syed Kamall accused EU negotiator Michel Barnier of scheming to delay Brexit to further his political career.

Mr Kamall said: “Some of my friends in the European People’s Party tell me that Barnier himself has no interest in negotiations being over quickly.

“Now he’s being talked about, if he can keep his profile up, as a potential Spitzenkandidat, a potential candidate for the Presidency of the Commission after 2019.”Now in order to keep Barnier’s profile up, so say some of his more satirical friends, actually it’s in his interests to keep negotiations going for as long as possible so he’s in the spotlight for as long as possible, so people come to him and say: ‘This is the man who should be leading the EPP’.”

Tory sources said Prime Minister Theresa May is increasingly confident that her Brexit update speech in Florence last month secured trade talks with the EU.

The insiders told the Daily Mail: “The mood on Brexit is much more positive than the public pronouncements you hear, particularly from the European Commission.

“There is a growing sense of people feeling a bit more momentum and wanting to get on to looking at the future partnership.”
