A no deal Brexit will damage the European Union but Britain will succeed regardless of whether a deal is struck, the transport secretary has said. Chris Grayling told the Andrew Marr Show that he believes exiting the European Union without negotiating the deal would be bad for the EU.

Although he reiterated Theresa May’s viewpoint that a no deal is better than a bad deal, the senior minister said he believed a deal would be struck after shadow chancellor John McDonnell said Labour would work to block such a scenario.

Grayling told Marr: ‘We have a hugely impressive track record in the world. ‘I think it is better for us to have a good relationship with our neighbours in Europe to carry on trading freely.

‘We are their biggest export market, we do business together, of it is better that is the case and that’s where I think we’ll get to . ‘But I’m absolutely confident Britain will succeed come what may.’

He then added: ‘It’s bad for the European Union if we don’t have a sensible trading arrangement.’ Asked what would happen to food prices if there was no deal, he told Marr: ‘It would mean that producers, supermarkets bought more at home, that British farmers produced more, that they bought more from around the world and it would damage French producers and continental producers.’

He said the negotiations were where he ‘expected them to be’ and insisted no one had believed they would be done in ‘half an hour’. ‘This was always going to be a long and difficult negotiation,’ he said.
