EU outwitted as Theresa May ‘plays off bloc’s fear of Boris Johnson to get Brexit moving’

EU LEADERS softened their stance on Brexit negotiations over fears Boris Johnson could become Prime Minister if talks remain deadlocked, it has been revealed.

One senior EU source is reported to have claimed that Theresa May has “played the Boris card”, suggesting she provoked EU leaders to shift their positions by playing up to concerns in Europe that Boris Johnson could succeed her and take a more hardline approach to Brexit. On Friday, during a European Council meeting in Brussels, EU leaders agreed to start internal discussions on trade and transition talks in time for negotiations with the UK in December.

The meeting marked the EU’s initial target date for trade talks to start, however they have not yet materialised due to EU concerns over insufficient progress being made on the “Brexit bill”, citizens’ rights and the Irish border.

After the meeting, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was in “absolutely no doubt” that the EU and the UK could make a success of Brexit negotiations.

“I see the ball not only in the UK’s court but I also see it in our court to the same extent.”

Meanwhile European Council president Donald Tusk claimed talk of deadlock had been “exaggerated” and said he wanted to be the “positive motivator” in talks.

And European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also expressed his desire to reach an agreement with the UK.

“I want to have a fair deal with Britain.”

Earlier this week Boris Johnson slammed EU chiefs for not being “serious” over Brexit negotiations.

Speaking on Tuesday during a Brexit debate in the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary said EU citizens in the UK had not received reassurance they deserved because of the Brussels bloc.

He said: “It is up to our friends and partners in the EU now to look seriously at the offer we are making and particularly on citizens, to make progress.“Everybody wants to make progress, everybody wants to give the 3.2 million EU citizens in this country the maximum possible reassurance and security.

“That can only happen once our friends and partners decide to get serious in these negotiations.”

If they are scared of Boris lets have him as PM, The Tory PM is little more than a figure head anyway if she doesn’t do what the party want they will kick her out just as they did Thatcher The difference is all recent Tory PMs have been a weak as you know what. Boris could not do worse than May the Betray has and If he surrounds himself with the right cabinet including JRM that would give the eu enough headaches till we crash out of the EU. I still think we will have walk away sooner or… Read more »

Jane and Peter below have said about Mays weakness, i actually think it is much more dishonest than just weakness.
She is putting the EU before Britain deliberately for some kind of future favor .
I am not sure what game she is playing but it is more devious than weak.

I sincerely hope i am wrong and she is just inept.

I agree Peter….I have said all along that having any remain supporters handling Brexit is an affront to everyone who voted to leave. It’s not rocket science that people like May who want to remain in the EU are not going to be firm enough and not buckle under the pressure and blackmail of the likes of Junker his corrupt buds.
