EU Plan B SHOCK: Brussels contingency plot over fears Brexit talks will COLLAPSE in WEEKS

THE EUROPEAN Union has begun drafting a contingency plan over fears Brexit negotiations will collapse in December.

The remaining members from the EU banded together yesterday – and left British negotiators out in the cold – to map out their trade ties with London after Brexit. But some within those talks have revealed they were also assessing what they should do if talks with the UK collapse before the end of the year.

The move is seen as being a sign that the bloc does not believe that there will be much progress on the negotiations by the end of the year.

Prime Minister Theresa May’s request to start talks on post-Brexit trade arrangements was previously shot down by EU officials.

The EU leaders promised to start internal preparations on a transition period and the bloc’s future ties with Britain. That would allow them to quickly sit down to such talks with London should enough progress on the exit part be made by the time of an EU summit on December 14 to 15.

The next seven weeks are crucial for talks between the EU and Britain, as the UK’s departure date is set for March 2019.

One EU official involved in the talks said: ”We will prepare our thinking on the transition, the future relationship.”
However, another told Bloomberg those who attended the closed door meeting agreed to look into what to do if things do not go according to plan.Donald Tusk, the European council president said the bloc will have to reconsider their Brexit strategy if London fails to improve its divorce offer significantly by the end of the year.

He wants an offer of £50-60billion, while British officials want to pay far less.

Settling Britain’s exit bill is the most contentious issue on the table.

But the EU is also concerned about citizens rights and the state of the Irish border post-Brexit.

Last week, during a two-day summit, Mrs May pitched her vision of Brexit during a dinner with Jean-Claude Juncker. But a host of European leaders, including French president Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Angela Merkel and the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier urged London to improve its divorce offer.

The European chiefs have been accused of stalling talks after it said not enough progress had been made.

Brexit minister David Davis also got in hot water after he was forced to backtrack after making comments that MPs might not be able to vote on the terms of the divorce from the EU before it happens.

He said London wanted to have an outline agreement with the EU in place by the end of March 2018 on the transition that would apply temporarily after it leaves the bloc.

Mr Barnier, said earlier this week that that would mean preserving the status quo as Britain would stay subject to EU laws and courts during that time.

He suggested it should run for 20 months, from the day Brexit begins until the end of the current common EU budget at end of 2020.

Mr Barnier has also said the chief difference between full EU membership and the transition period would be that “the British would no longer take part in decisions on European legislation”.

EU officials said the extra two years would buy time for talks about a future trade agreement but poured cold water on any talk of extending negotiations beyond that period with a view to keeping Britain within the EU.However, Brussels is growing impatient with the lack of progress.

An EU official said: “We’ve already danced around with the UK for so long. It needs to end at some point.”

May Should not have let herself get suckered into this situation. Has she not yet worked out the more she offers the more they will demand, eventually the circle must break and we should just leave and owe them nothing. They we can say that can say legitimately that we walked away because of totality unreasonable and illegal demands from the eu It amounts to nothing more than a protection racket. No you cant have a trade deal unless you pay us mega Euros. It is time the EU came back to planet earth.
