We’ll protect our fish! Crowd ERUPTS as John Redwood promises UK will take back fisheries

BREXIT will put an end to the “damaging” EU policies regulating access to British fish in British waters, Conservative MP John Redwood said.

The crowd erupted into raucous applause when the staunch Brexiteer said the UK will finally be able to regulate its fisheries away from EU diktats.Mr Redwood slammed Brussels’ policies for “damaging” British fish because of “bad laws” the UK will change once it leaves the bloc.

He said: “I don’t want to be under the powers of the European court anymore because there are bad laws we need to change.

Mr Redwood said Brexit Britain will be free to regulate its own waters and fish

“We need a fishing policy that makes sense for British fishermen and British fish, for example. We cannot do that at the moment.”Our British fish have been very badly damaged by the Common Fisheries Policy, I can tell you. We will look after them a lot better.”

The UK is currently bound to EU policy regulating sea access through a “socially sustainable” system that allows equal access to common waters to all EU member states.

British fishermen have been complaining for years about their waters being overfished by other countries and quotas imposed following the adoption of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) when the UK became a member of the EU in 1973.

According to the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, nearly 60 per cent of British fish is currently taken by other EU countries because of the CFP.But Mr Redwood, who fiercely campaigned in favour of the Leave vote during the Brexit referendum, confirmed Brexit Britain will regain control of both its waters and its fish.

He also demanded the Treasury ensure no extra money is given to the EU in the years that follow Brexit.

Speaking to the BBC Any Questions audience, he said: “I don’t want the Treasury giving away billions and billions of pounds for several years in the future which we need for our priorities now.

“I fought the referendum with many other people saying we need the £12bn a year that we give away and don’t get back right now. I accept we can’t do it until March 2019 because of the rules of getting out but I don’t want the Treasury giving away years and years of our contribution when we desperately need that money at home.”

We should NEVER have given up OUR fishing grounds in the first place !!!! People forget that WE ARE AN ISLAND, AND THEREFORE ACTUALLY OWN A LARGE AMOUNT OF OUR SURROUNDING COASTAL WATERS !!!!!
OUR COAST GUARDS SHOULD BE PUT IN A POSITION OF BEING ABLE TO PROTECT THEM BY ALL NECESSARY MEANS!! BRITISH NAVAL VESSELS SHOULD BE PUT “ON PATROL” WITH ORDERS TO ESCORT ALL FOREIGN FISHING VESSELS FROM “OUR” WATERS BY FORCE IF DEEMED NECESSARY !!!!
