‘Swexit is our only hope’ Swedish MEP predicts more states will follow Britain out the EU

MORE countries will follow Britain out of the European Union once their populations realise the cost of accelerating federalisation after Brexit, a leading Swedish MEP said today.

By NICK GUTTERIDGE, BRUSSELS CORRESPONDENT

Peter Lundgren said quitting the bloc is now the “only way to survive as a sovereign state” and warned wealthier nations will end up paying even more into the Brussels pot after 2019.In an interview with express.co.uk the Sweden Democrats MEP said the UK will be “a great example for us” once Brexit is complete even if there are costs to the process in the short-term.

Mr Lundgren, whose party is currently projected in third place but has previously topped the polls ahead of next year’s general election, said Stockholm should seek a UK-style “renegotiation” of its EU membership.

This new deal should then be put to the vote in a referendum, with Swedish people being given the opportunity for vote for a break with the bloc just like Britain – a move dubbed Swexit.

Mr Lundgren said he was particularly concerned about new proposals from some quarters for the EU to be able to raise direct taxes from citizens to help it cover the Brexit budget black hole.

And he bemoaned the fact that europhiles’ answer to people’s growing disinterest in the project is to pursue ever greater federalisation, something that will alienate people even more. The Swedish MEP said: “We only have one option to survive as a sovereign state and that’s to leave just like the UK are doing now, because the EU has already taken over more and more of the decision rights and it will just increase.

“They are now saying they want direct taxation. That was never the power of the EU in the beginning. It was supposed to make it easier for the states to trade together, not that we’d be part of a superstate.

“I think there will be a huge reaction because it will soon by pretty clear for the remaining states in the project that they will have to put more money into the system.

“There is no intention to slow down it’s pedal to the metal – they are never talking about cutbacks. Instead of it being what we wanted in the beginning, a simple trading bloc, they’ve created this monster that every time wants to take bigger bites out of national sovereignty.”

If you want to remain a sovereign state taking decisions in your own country then you have to leave

He added: “For me it’s more and more clear if you want to remain a sovereign state taking decisions in your own country then you have to leave and I think once Brexit has been concluded the UK will become a beacon of light and hope.”Mr Lundgren recounted a recent conversation he held with the Brexit coordinator and committed eurofederalist, Guy Verhofstadt, at which he was accused of having an outdated view of a Europea of nation states.

On suggestions EU countries now need to work more closely together, he said: “Where has that vision led us to? Well, actually to the reality that the UK is leaving because they don’t want to be run by the EU.

“A reality where the poorer member states are actually outcompeting businesses in Sweden and the UK and the wealthier member states are looking at competition from countries where the salaries are way lower.”

He warned EU leaders: “People are being used and paid so little money that it’s almost impossible to live – that’s what this cooperation has led us into.”Like with Britain, Mr Lundgren said people in Sweden – which joined the bloc in 1994 following a referendum – were told the EU was a simple trading organisation and not a superstate.

He pointed out that 60 per cent of Swedish laws are now made in Brussels, not Stockholm, and said that the project’s evolution over the last 20 years was “a direction no one could have foreseen”.

He said: “If it went back to the original idea I think the Swedish people would vote to stay in the EU but that will never happen because they have too many power ambitions now.

“It’s a self-dying project as I see it right now because the only solution to the lack of interest from the European people is more EU all the time. It’s only more and more power ambitions all the time.”
