A MEETING with arch-federalist MEP Guy Verhofstadt converted a Conservative MP to join the ranks calling for Britain to leave the EU without a Brexit deal.
Mr Chope had been optimistic for the meetings after Theresa May’s Government seemed to be making progress in Brexit talks.
But the meetings made him realise there was no way the EU will ever allow Britain a good deal – so talks will ultimately be pointless.

Guy Verhofstadt convinced Christopher Chope there is no chance of a good Brexit deal
Mr Chope said: “The EU wants to require the UK to agree to its financial demands, to accept that every EU citizen resident in the UK has the right to live in the UK forever and for that right to be extended to parents and children.
“The EU would also make remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union a pre-requisite to having a frictionless border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
He pointed out the insistence on huge Brexit payouts coupled with blocking a good deal indicated Britain was set for a punishing deal that would act as a deterrent for other countries weighing up whether they should leave the EU.
It comes as a bombshell survey shows half of Conservative members say Theresa May should immediately declare she will walk away from the EU with no deal.
Leading Brexiteers argue this would allow the UK “to negotiate free trade agreements across the globe”.
